Will we choose to listen?
Leaning in
Friend, it has been a long few months. I know you have felt it too. At first, the ceasing of activities was a welcomed rest. The stripping away of our schedules allowed for time to breathe and slow down. My family enjoyed evening dance parties, games made up by my daughter, and watching movies. The simplifying brought a rest our souls deeply needed yet struggled to find in the midst of hurried schedules.
But now, here we are wondering, “How long, Lord, how long?” Maybe if we had chosen this simplifying it would be easier now. Instead, we feel so much has been stripped away, and we want it back. We desperately want it back. Not the busyness, or the rush from one activity to the next, but the freedom to choose where and when we go. We want to meet together in our churches, and run to hug one another in the store. And then we feel like whining children, as we feel suffocated by our own four walls.
One morning, as I sat pouring out my frustrations to the Lord, I asked Him what He wanted me to know. This is a portion of what He said:
Come to me, I will give you rest. My people busy themselves because they do not trust me. They run from one task to the next because they fear stillness. I have so much to say, but they will not listen. I have so much to share, but they have not learned to recognize my voice. But, I am the God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I will remain, waiting for my people to draw near to me.
Going Further
During this time of so many unknowns, are you choosing to listen? Are you being intentional about spending time not only praying, but in being still to give the Lord space to speak? I encourage you to sit and simply ask, “What do you want me to know today, Father?” He will be faithful to answer.
Scripture
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! (Proverbs 3:5-8, The Message Bible)
A Final Word
Thank you so much for reading these devotionals. It has been an honor to contribute to this online publication. I am going to miss gathering with you on these pages, but I look forward to what lies ahead. Be blessed friends, God is still very near.
